Apple has introduced the iPhone Duo, its first foldable phone, with a compact outer screen and a larger inner display designed for multitasking and media. The device uses the A20 Pro processor, launches with iOS 27.1, and starts at $1,999 in the United States. Preorders are scheduled to open October 16, followed by general availability on October 23.
Two screens share one aspect ratio
When closed, the phone presents a 5.4-inch Super Retina XDR outer display. Opening it reveals a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR panel that Apple says is 50 percent larger than the screen on the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Both panels use the same aspect ratio, allowing content to scale without switching to a differently shaped canvas. They also support ProMotion, Always-On display functions, and peak outdoor brightness of 3,000 nits. A previous Samsung Galaxy S4 overview provides historical context for large-screen smartphone design.
The inner panel has a nano-texture surface intended to reduce glare and make the crease less visible. A FaceTime camera sits beneath that display, while Touch ID is integrated into the side button. The grade 5 titanium body includes a hinge assembled from more than 100 components. Apple lists IP68 water and dust resistance, Ceramic Shield on the back, and Ceramic Shield 2 over the outer display.
A20 Pro and a dual-battery layout
The A20 Pro works with a custom vapor chamber and a display engine that drives both panels. Apple claims up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner screen, up to 44 hours on the outer screen, or up to 24 hours when use is divided equally between them. Wired charging can reach 50 percent in about 20 minutes, while MagSafe or Qi2 charging can reach the same level in about 30 minutes under Apple’s stated test conditions.
Cameras use the folding format
The rear system combines a 48-megapixel Fusion Main camera with a 48-megapixel Fusion Ultra Wide camera. The main camera offers an optical-quality 2x option, while the ultra-wide unit supports macro photography. The outer display can act as a preview for a person being photographed, and the folded body can support hands-free framing. Video features include 4K recording at 120 frames per second in Dolby Vision on the main camera.
Software, storage, and launch details
iOS 27 adds Split View for two apps, support for two windows from the same app, saved app pairs, and a StandBy mode that works without charging. Apple Pencil support through the USB-C model is planned for later in the year. Storage choices are 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB, with star white and night sky finishes. The phone uses eSIM worldwide and supports Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, Thread, and US mmWave connections.
The specifications describe an ambitious first-generation format, but durability, battery behavior, app adaptation, and crease visibility will need independent assessment after retail units ship. Full launch details and regional notes are available from Apple.
