HUAWEI XMAGE Awards 2026 Opens Global Entries

HUAWEI XMAGE Awards 2026 Opens Global Entries

Huawei has officially opened submissions for the XMAGE Awards 2026, marking the 10th edition of its global mobile photography competition. This year’s theme, “Now is Your Shot,” pushes creators to capture personal perspectives, fleeting moments, and visual stories using the tools they already carry every day. What started as a smartphone imaging contest has gradually grown into a much broader cultural platform, connecting millions of image-makers across different regions, styles, and levels of experience.

Since launching in 2017, the awards have attracted entries from more than 170 countries and regions, with nearly six million submissions in total. That scale alone says a lot about how far mobile photography has come. The XMAGE Awards are no longer just about showing off camera hardware. They now sit at the intersection of visual culture, storytelling, and creative experimentation, which makes the 2026 edition feel less like a product-driven campaign and more like a global image movement.

A Theme Built Around Timing and Perspective

The new proposition, “Now is Your Shot”, gives the contest a more personal and immediate tone. Instead of focusing only on emotion or human connection like previous editions, Huawei is now leaning into the act of seeing itself: recognizing a scene, framing a thought, and pressing the shutter at the right second. It is a simple phrase, but it works because it speaks to both spontaneity and intention, which are basically the two fuels of good photography.

That shift also reflects how smartphone imaging is being used today. People are not only documenting daily life anymore. They are building visual identity, experimenting with narrative formats, and sharing work that can feel as personal as a diary or as polished as an editorial series. In that sense, the 2026 theme is not just motivational branding. It aligns well with how creators actually shoot now.

Nine Categories, One Global Stage

This year, the contest includes nine categories: So Far So Close, Good Night, Color & Shade, Faces, A Heartwarming World, Experimental Lab, Storyboard, Action, and the newly added Active Moments. The new category is especially relevant because it opens more space for sports, outdoor, and travel photography, areas where smartphone cameras increasingly thrive thanks to faster capture, better stabilization, and more flexible editing workflows.

Together, these categories balance familiar subjects with room for experimentation. Some are clearly rooted in everyday observation, while others encourage more conceptual or stylized work. That mix is one of the smarter parts of the XMAGE format. It gives casual shooters a clear entry point while still leaving room for creative risk and avant-garde expression, which keeps the contest from feeling too safe.

How the Awards and Judging Work

The competition keeps the same core structure introduced previously with the XMAGE 100. From all eligible entries, the jury will select 100 standout works, and each selected creator will receive a $1,500 prize before tax. From that group, three photographers will then be named Photographer of the Year, with each receiving $10,000 before tax based on the strength and artistic quality of their submissions.

The judging panel also adds serious credibility. This year’s jurors include Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Liu Heung Shing, Paris Photo director Florence Bourgeois, and other editors, photographers, and visual media leaders. That range matters because it means entries are not being viewed only through a technical lens. They are being evaluated through storytelling value and artistic impact, which is exactly what a mature imaging contest should do.

Entry Channels and Why This Edition Matters

Huawei is accepting entries globally from March 23, 2026 until August 16, 2026 at 24:00 Beijing Time. Participants can join through the official website, My HUAWEI app, VMALL, HUAWEI Community, Instagram, Tuchong, and 500px. Huawei smartphone users also get a new one-tap post option through the My HUAWEI app, which removes some of the usual friction involved in contest submissions. Human beings do love making a process complicated, so trimming the steps is actually useful for once.

Beyond the competition itself, Huawei is continuing its broader XMAGE Atelier initiative, which expands photography workshops and co-creation events into more cities worldwide. That gives the awards more long-term value than a standard annual contest. In the end, Huawei is positioning XMAGE Awards 2026 as both a showcase and a community engine, with winning works set to be exhibited at Paris’s Grand Palais later this year. Submissions are open now, and the prize structure, global access, and exhibition opportunity make this one of the more notable mobile imaging events on the 2026 calendar.
