Akko Introduces U1 Mechanical Switch Family

As it approaches its tenth anniversary, Akko has introduced the new U1 Switch Series, a next-generation lineup of mechanical keyboard switches designed around improved materials, refined engineering, and enhanced acoustics. The first model in the family, Creamy Yellow U1, represents the company’s latest effort to create a smoother and more consistent typing experience for both newcomers and experienced keyboard enthusiasts.

The new series reflects the growing demand for custom mechanical keyboards where switch feel, sound, and durability are equally important. Rather than focusing on a single specification, the U1 lineup combines material innovation with structural improvements to produce a more balanced typing experience while maintaining compatibility with a wide range of mechanical keyboard builds.

A New Material Formula for Better Performance

The centerpiece of the U1 Series is its newly developed POM-blend material. While preserving the self-lubricating properties associated with traditional POM, the updated formulation improves smoothness, consistency, and overall durability. The result is a cleaner keystroke with reduced friction and a more refined sound profile straight from the factory.

Every switch also arrives with factory lubrication, eliminating the need for manual lubing for most users. Combined with the upgraded POM top housing, the design minimizes unwanted spring noise and resonance while delivering a stable feel during extended typing sessions.

Structural Changes Improve Sound and Feel

Akko redesigned the switch with a cylindrical stem and optimized guide rails to reduce unnecessary contact during movement. These changes help produce a deeper, more focused “thocky” sound while improving key stability and lowering vibration throughout each keystroke.

The debut model, Creamy Yellow U1, further refines the internal structure by combining characteristics from previous switch generations. It blends the crisp response found in the V3 design with the deeper acoustic profile of the V5 generation, creating a balanced option suitable for different typing preferences and keyboard configurations.

Improved RGB and Practical Design

Beyond typing performance, the new switch incorporates a dedicated light-guiding column that distributes RGB lighting more evenly across compatible keyboards. This helps reduce dark spots and light loss, allowing illuminated keyboards to achieve a brighter and more uniform appearance.

Akko has also updated the packaging by introducing a standard 100-switch box. The new packaging simplifies full keyboard builds, switch replacements, storage, and bulk assembly while reducing packaging waste compared to previous formats.

Expanding the U1 Ecosystem

The U1 family extends beyond Creamy Yellow U1. The lineup also includes Creamy Purple U1 for tactile enthusiasts, Piano U1 for users seeking smoother linear operation, and Crystal Silver U1, which is optimized for fast actuation and rapid rebound in gaming scenarios. Each model targets a different preference while sharing the same core U1 platform.

Akko. says the U1 ecosystem will continue expanding with future silent switch options and integration into upcoming keyboards, including the 5075 V5 and additional V5 Series models. The new switches are now available through the company’s global sales channels, with pricing and regional availability varying by market.
