Insta360 GO Ultra Gets Gemini-Powered AI Assistant

Insta360 is giving its compact GO Ultra wearable camera a significant intelligence boost with a new AI Voice Assistant built with Google Gemini. Instead of limiting the camera to hands-free video capture, the software update adds tools for translation, visual questions and general voice queries, potentially making the GO Ultra more useful when traveling without constantly reaching for a smartphone.

Google Gemini Moves Into the Wearable Camera

The assistant can be activated by long-pressing the shutter button or saying “Hey, Kira” while the GO Ultra is powered on. This approach is interesting because the camera already sits in an ideal position for first-person interaction. Its magnetic mounting system lets users keep it on their clothing or quickly remove it when they need to point the camera at something specific.

There are four main functions in the update: real-time translation, Ask with Photo, Ask by Voice and voiceprint recognition. Together, they expand the GO Ultra from a tiny vlogging camera into something closer to a wearable visual assistant. The concept makes particular sense for travelers, where navigation, language and unfamiliar surroundings frequently generate quick questions.

Real-Time Translation Without Passing Around a Phone

Real-time translation is probably the most immediately practical addition. Users can speak naturally while the GO Ultra interprets conversations, reducing the need to type phrases into a phone and then hand the screen to another person. That could be handy for ordering food, shopping, using public transportation or handling other everyday interactions abroad.

The wearable design also changes how translation feels compared with a conventional smartphone app. Since the GO Ultra can remain attached to the user, conversations can stay relatively hands-free. It can also be detached magnetically and passed to another person when that interaction works better.

Ask With Photo and Ask By Voice Do Different Jobs

The new Ask with Photo feature lets the camera analyze what is directly in front of it. A traveler might point GO Ultra at a foreign-language sign, an unfamiliar building, a museum exhibit or a landmark and ask for an explanation. Gemini then uses the visual input to provide contextual information rather than requiring the user to describe the object manually.

Ask by Voice, meanwhile, focuses on questions that do not necessarily require visual input. Users can ask about weather, prices, local food, souvenirs, history or recommendations. Keeping these modes separate makes the interaction fairly intuitive: show the camera something when visual context matters, or simply ask when it does not.

Voiceprint recognition addresses another real-world problem: background noise. Insta360 says GO Ultra can learn the user’s voice and distinguish it in environments such as crowded streets and trains. How reliably that works in genuinely chaotic locations will be an important part of the actual user experience.

From Capturing Trips to Understanding Them

The update also fits neatly alongside Insta360’s existing Moments Pro, although the company makes clear that it is separate from the AI Voice Assistant. Moments Pro analyzes recorded footage, finds notable moments, organizes clips and matches them with music, while the new assistant is focused on interactions and information during the trip itself.

For families, the combination could be particularly useful as children can immediately ask questions about plants, wildlife, architecture or historic sites. There is also an interesting storytelling angle: interactions with people and places can happen through the same wearable device already recording the experience.
