FreePlay Combines Stereo Sound With IP67 Protection

Andover Audio is entering the portable Bluetooth speaker market with FreePlay, a $429 model built around a less common priority: producing stereo sound from a single, travel-ready enclosure. Rather than focusing only on maximum loudness, the speaker combines separate high- and low-frequency drivers with a passive radiator, aiming to bring some of the spatial character of a home audio system to patios, kitchens, beaches, and weekend trips.

A True Stereo Design in One Portable Speaker

The main distinction is FreePlay’s true stereo architecture. It uses two 25mm dome tweeters, two 5.25-inch woofers, and a rear-mounted 160mm passive radiator. That configuration should give left and right audio information more room to breathe than a conventional mono portable speaker, while the passive radiator reinforces bass without requiring an exposed port.

There is still a physical limitation: stereo separation from one compact cabinet cannot equal two speakers placed several feet apart. However, listeners sitting relatively close to FreePlay may benefit from clearer placement of vocals and instruments. Its sound tuning is derived from Andover’s home systems, with the company claiming clear highs, natural bass, and a balanced presentation rather than bass-heavy party-speaker voicing.

Built for Indoor and Outdoor Listening

An IP67 rating makes FreePlay resistant to dust and temporary water immersion under the conditions covered by that standard. This expands its practical use around pools, beaches, patios, and campsites, although buyers should still follow the manufacturer’s care instructions rather than treating it as permanently waterproof.

The nine-pound weight is substantial compared with small grab-and-go speakers, but it reflects the larger drivers and cabinet. A fold-down handle helps with short-distance carrying, while tie-down bars on both side panels allow the unit to be clipped, strapped, or anchored during travel. Ivory, Olive, and Slate finishes also make it easier to place indoors without the rugged styling common to outdoor speakers.

Battery, Charging, and Wired Connectivity

Andover rates the battery for up to 24 hours at moderate volume, so real runtime will depend on playback level and feature use. The USB-C port supports bidirectional charging, allowing the speaker to receive power or supply it to another device. A Qi-compatible charging pad can also top up a phone wirelessly, although using FreePlay as a power bank will naturally reduce listening time.

Bluetooth 6.0 and LE Audio support provide the wireless foundation, while a 3.5mm auxiliary input accommodates older or non-Bluetooth sources. Microphone support is included as well. No companion app is required: top-mounted buttons cover power, playback, volume, track navigation, linking, Loud mode, and battery status. The app-free approach keeps setup simple, though it may offer less software customization than app-controlled rivals.

From Personal Listening to Party Mode

For larger spaces, Party Mode can link up to 99 additional FreePlay units for synchronized playback. This is more relevant to events or multi-zone outdoor setups than everyday listening, and it requires purchasing matching speakers. A selectable Loud mode adds 6dB of output when extra projection is needed, trading the normal listening profile for greater reach.

FreePlay therefore targets listeners who value fuller stereo-oriented reproduction, long battery life, and a furniture-friendly design more than ultra-light portability. The nine-pound body and $429 price put it above casual compact speakers, but its larger driver system, charging options, and IP67 construction give it a distinct role between portable party audio and home hi-fi.
