GoPro MISSION 1 PRO ILS Brings 8K to MFT

GoPro is expanding beyond conventional action cameras with two connected releases: the MISSION 1 PRO ILS compact cinema camera and the MISSION Monitor app for iPhone and iPad. The camera combines a Micro Four Thirds lens mount with high-resolution video modes, while the app provides monitoring tools normally associated with larger production setups.

A Tiny Cinema Camera With Interchangeable Lenses

The MISSION 1 PRO ILS weighs 197 grams without a lens and uses the same 50MP 1-inch sensor and GP3 processor found in the MISSION 1 PRO. Its main difference is the interchangeable lens system, allowing filmmakers to select wide-angle, macro, telephoto, vintage, or adapted cinema lenses according to the shot.

This flexibility makes the camera more useful for car interiors, follow-camera rigs, drones, and other locations where a conventional cinema body would require more space and support equipment. It records up to 8K at 60 fps, 4K at 240 fps, and 1440p at 480 fps. Open Gate recording is available at up to 8K30 or 4K120, capturing the full sensor area for easier reframing into horizontal, vertical, or square formats.

Professional Video and Audio Features

The camera supports 10-bit color, GP-Log2 recording, HLG HDR, timecode synchronization, and bit rates of up to 240Mbps. GoPro Labs can unlock experimental controls, including a 300Mbps option and customized stabilization settings. These features position the camera for productions that need more grading flexibility or synchronized footage from multiple cameras.

Manual focusing is supported by Focus Assist magnification and Focus Peaking on the rear touchscreen. However, the lens mount has no electronic contacts. Compatible lenses must provide manual focus and either a fixed aperture no wider than f/4.5 or manual aperture adjustment. Lenses that rely on electronic controls will not operate properly.

A four-microphone array handles onboard sound, while 32-bit float audio can be recorded to a separate WAV file to reduce the risk of digital clipping. Other audio options include manual gain, automatic gain control, limiting, Bluetooth 5.3 audio, USB-C microphones, and native multitrack recording.

Battery Life and Stabilization Limitations

The removable 2,150mAh Enduro 2 battery is rated for more than three hours of continuous 4K30 recording or more than five hours at 1080p30 under GoPro’s specified test conditions. Faster charging should also reduce downtime during longer shooting sessions.

HyperSmooth stabilization is available, but lens choice matters. GoPro officially profiles five fisheye lenses and supports rectilinear Micro Four Thirds lenses from 6mm to 500mm. The company has only guaranteed its testing results through 50mm, so stabilization performance with longer lenses may vary. The 1080p960 Burst Slo-Mo mode is another qualified feature: clips are limited to ten seconds, 8-bit color, and no GP-Log2 support.

MISSION Monitor Turns an iPhone Into a Field Display

The free MISSION Monitor app connects MISSION 1 Series cameras to an iPhone or iPad. It supplies a larger live preview with Focus Peaking, pinch-to-zoom Focus Assist, Zebra Pattern exposure warnings, framing grids, aspect-ratio overlays, and integrated recording controls.

Its real-time LUT preview is particularly useful for GP-Log2 recording because operators can preview a graded appearance without baking that look into the footage. The app therefore reduces dependence on a separate field monitor for lightweight setups, although compatibility is limited to Apple devices running iOS 18 or later.

The MISSION 1 PRO ILS is aimed at filmmakers, commercial content creators, and specialized camera operators who need interchangeable lenses in a rugged, compact body.
