Sony Launches Its First Full-Frame Fisheye Zoom Lens

Sony Electronics has introduced the SEL814G, its first fisheye zoom G Lens for full-frame Alpha E-mount cameras. Covering 8 mm to 14 mm, the lens lets photographers move between circular and diagonal fisheye perspectives without swapping optics. Its constant f/3.5 aperture, 314 g weight, and autofocus system also make it relevant to video creators working with handheld rigs or gimbals.

Two Fisheye Perspectives in One Lens

The main advantage of the Sony SEL814G is its adjustable fisheye coverage. At 8 mm, it produces a circular image with a 180-degree angle of view on a full-frame sensor. Zooming to 14 mm fills the frame and delivers a 180-degree diagonal view. Intermediate focal lengths give creators more control over how much of the image circle remains visible.

This flexibility matters because fisheye composition is highly dependent on camera position. A fixed fisheye lens may force the photographer to move closer or crop afterward, while the 8-14 mm range allows framing adjustments from the same location. Potential applications include exaggerated architecture, immersive landscapes, action sports, music videos, and other scenes where visible distortion is part of the intended look.

G Lens Optics and Close-Up Capability

Sony uses ED glass and aspherical elements to control chromatic and geometric aberrations across the zoom range. The company claims the design maintains G Lens resolution throughout the frame, although real-world performance will still depend on focal length, aperture, focus distance, and the placement of subjects near the curved image boundaries.

A minimum focusing distance of 0.15 m adds another creative option. At the 14 mm end, the lens reaches a maximum magnification of 0.22x, allowing a foreground object to dominate the composition while retaining an extremely wide background. Photographers will need to watch the front element carefully at such short distances because it can easily approach the subject or capture unwanted reflections.

Built for Handheld and Video Production

The SEL814G measures approximately 63.1 mm in diameter and 82.8 mm long. Its 314 g body is relatively easy to integrate into compact kits, while the inner zoom mechanism reduces changes to the lens balance during focal-length adjustments. That should be useful when the camera is mounted on a gimbal or another weight-sensitive support system.

Video-focused features include quiet autofocus, reduced focus breathing, and Linear Response manual focus. Physical controls consist of a focus-mode switch, zoom-lock switch, and aperture ring with switchable click stops. The lens also has a fluorine-coated front element and a dust- and moisture-resistant design, though Sony notes that complete protection against dust and moisture is not guaranteed.

A Specialized Option for Spatial Content

The lens can also be used in a dual-camera arrangement with two separately sold VENICE Extension System Mini units. Placing two SEL814G lenses side by side creates an optical-axis spacing of approximately 64 mm, close to average human eye separation. This configuration is intended to support spatial and VR production with a more natural impression of depth and distance.

That workflow requires substantial additional hardware, so it is unlikely to be the main reason most Alpha users consider this lens. For photographers and solo filmmakers, the more immediate appeal is having circular and diagonal fisheye effects in one portable optic. The specialized projection also means it will complement rather than replace a conventional ultra-wide lens, particularly when straight lines and natural proportions are important.

The SEL814G is scheduled to become available in October 2026 at an MSRP of $1,599.99 in the US and CAD$1,999.99 in Canada, with pre-orders opening September 8, 2026. That positions it as a specialist creative lens for photographers, cinematographers, and spatial-content teams that need adjustable fisheye coverage.
